I mean, I know where it came from, but at the same time, it just came out of almost nowhere. And then about a month or so ago, I wrote almost an album's worth of material for the band. "I've spent about seven years without writing anything for the band," Springsteen told Scorsese at one point. On, during the opening night of Netflix's third annual FYSEE event in Los Angeles, Springsteen sat down for a long conversation with director Martin Scorsese. The remaining nine were "recently written," as per the album's press release. Three of the album's twelve tracks are new recordings of unreleased songs that Springsteen wrote in the early seventies. These are just internal productions and instincts that we all have." Nils Lofgren told Forbes' Steve Baltin: "On 'Ghosts,' I'd be playing this acoustic rhythm and it felt good and musical. The album version of GHOSTS was recorded with The E Street Band live in studio in November 2019 (see the "Letter To You" section below for more details). 'Ghosts' tries to speak to the spirit of the music itself, something none of us owns but can only discover and share together. As such, the lyrics ultimately come across as if Ghost is lambasting religious zealots across the board. There is a mention of “bishops with their choirboys”, which is more of an allusion to the practice of Catholicism – an institution many famous musicians seem to have issues with – than Christianity in general. What it really reads like, all things considered, is that Alexandria was out of control back in those days, and if caught up in some beef between powerful religio-political figures, just about anyone can be hemmed up or lynched. So to make a long story short, a less powerful, local Christian leader led an ambush in which Hypatia, who was obviously caught unaware, was brutally murdered. And whereas logic would dictate that disdain for her pagan beliefs had something to do with the crime, at this point it is difficult to ascertain to what degree her murder was motivated by politics or religion. Meanwhile, despite being a pagan herself, Hypatia was also respected amongst the Christian community in her hometown of Alexandria. So when these two political leaders, Cyril and Orestes, both of whom were Christian, began going at it, the latter, who was a personal friend of Hypatia’s, consulted her. This resulted, according to Wikipedia, in Cyril spreading nasty rumors about Hypatia. And with that in mind, it should perhaps also be noted that Orestes was formerly a pagan himself.
